Systematic hosts a PhD get-together

Theoretical issues face the complex reality

Big data. Which data? And are there too many or too few of them? The PhD students in DABAI research algorithms for future decision support. Their work consists in testing and training the models that describe all sorts of data challenges and solutions. They gathered at Systematic in September to discuss the difficult theoretical problems which can help us act in a complex reality.

Business and pleasure - and research!

Systematic had invited 10-12 PhD students in DABAI for a joint network event. According to Systematic, it is crucial to participate in a project such as DABAI, where you can work closely together with research groups at the Danish universities and try out some ideas. Ideas that should ideally turn into a business:

"Right now we are working to predict patient flow at the individual hospital departments in the North Denmark Region. We are addressing their challenges to see if we can help solve them, and if we can – it is a question of being the first on the market", says Director of Business Development & Operation from Systematic, Mikkel Harbo, who had invited to the event.

We do not start dealing with these challenges without a potential customer in mind. With DABAI we have the opportunity to explore the possibilities. And when we discover new problems - which we do – it is good to know the research groups at the universities and draw on their expertise, he says.

Examples of the research goals in the DABAI project are to:

  • improve patient flow in hospitals
  • predict water flow by means of new and large data models
  • support young people's learning by analysis of student’s writing styles
  • provide machine learning as-a-service and introduce machine learning to the users
  • make machines better at providing decision support by training data. And there is typically plenty of data. But how do we find out if the models and software are without faults? And if you find faults – are these caused by the data set or the software?

Benefits for companies that participate in DABAI

  • They can take extra risks
  • They can dive into an unknown business area
  • They are addressing a concrete problem in collaboration with the best research groups.

Benefits for PhD students who participate in DABAI

  • They can test and develop their models and theory in the complex reality - networking!
  • They meet with other PhD students who work with big data
  • They bring their research into play in the companies’ business models.
